Summer Adventures at KSR

Look a deer! and a beautiful sunset -Taken at Hilltop

This summer, I had the privilege to spend time with the (partial) Thomson Lab at UTSG campus and up at U of T’s Koffler Scientific Reserve in King City. The weather was almost always beautiful, the scenery bursting with life but still peaceful, and the people knowledgeable and welcoming. Besides dipping in the pond, drying off by the decked out gazebo, and eating lunch with fellow ROP’ers, grad students, and volunteers, my main purpose was the research credit I was working towards; my ROP299 (Research oppourtunity program) project. The general topic was Flowering Plants and Pollinating Insects but of course this encompasses a great many things from flowers to bees- and trust me thats an immense amount of subjects.

Year Two

Despite the attempts of the University to drown us students with sudden massive workloads I’m still highly enjoying the undergrad life and all the new experiences that come with it. This past summer was spent doing many things- calculus, research up north on bees, and a teaching program in China,- all which I have yet to post about. But they will come… in time (when it is not midterm season).

Most recently, I’ve attended Victoria College’s 175th Charter Day Convocation. It was a grand event in which they honoured very many distinguished alumni and graduating students. However, they also honoured winners of scholarships from Vic in 1st and 2nd year. Though some of it was suffocating it all around gave a sense of pride for our school and college. Congrats to all the award winners! And special mention to my high school friend Mohammad Texiwala- I hope for the best for us as we plug away at trying to keep up the grades.

Edward the Epic Talent

Special Behind the Scenes!

In mid-March 2011 I had the honour to shoot with Edward To, an amazing young photographer based in Toronto! I’ve known Edward since grade 10, when we met through a mutual friend. An everlasting memory of Edward, I must say is the time a group of us went to catch the TTC (subway) at Dundas station in downtown Toronto and Edward innocently inserted the streetcar transfer into the ticket box! For those who don’t know, in downtown Toronto, you only flash the ticket collector the transfer and he’ll let you pass haha (they have no way of retrieving the money and tickets dropped into the small clear box).

Foie Gras and a Lesson Learned

“Many ducks on foie gras farms suffer from anal hemmorrhaging.”

It all started in a restaurant in the TIFF Bell Lightbox called LUMA where we went to dine for Allex’s 20th birthday. I innocently tried a piece of David’s (Allex’s cousin) foie gras and I’m not sure what I was thinking at the time as it was quite a while ago but it must’ve been along the lines of “oh this little pink appetizer looks so cute and harmless”… but oh the naivety of adolescence… so little did I know that foie gras is a delicacy produced from the oversized force-fed liver of ducks. Although I learned this weeks later I still felt the urge to gag. Don’t get me wrong David & Allex, I really appreciate your generosity in sharing a piece of your expensive meal with me from which I’ve learned a very valuable lesson that I should’ve learned a long time ago! Approach all food with a HEALTHY DOSE OF SKEPTICISM

Great Spot.

Rollerblading in the not-so-summer-like weather was tons of fun and finding a very nice spot that seemed as ‘close to nature’ as we could get at the moment. The open water was surprisingly soothing and satisfying to sit by. These shots with an iTouch make me love it (who needs a real camera) haha I kid…
It was fun catching up with the meemster and b li and having an overall laidback first day off school while still getting some enjoyable exercise in. Good stuff and plenty more to come :)

So happy to be ‘free’!

First Year milestone

Hello all! :)

I apologize for the long gap in posting! Today I finished exams and it has felt like a most terrible and WONDERFUL accomplishment. Not including the extreme exam stress, leaving first year behind is bittersweet. Sigh. Time to move on to bigger things with more concrete goals (or are they?)

TIFF presents the Tim Burton Exhibit

The Tim Burton exhibit from The Museum of Modern Art in NYC arrived in Toronto in November and a few friends and I decided to finally pay it a visit. This past family day weekend admission was free (but the line was huge). After driving by on the first day with Mimi we decided the line was too long to wait in and parking too scarce. On the Monday, our families were out doing their own thing and we decided to get in line. This line happened to be a 2.5 hour line so we took turns going into timmys to defrost our hands and feet. The exhibit is taking place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, which also houses Canteen and LUMA, two lovely places to eat. In case you are unfamiliar, Tim Burton’s work includes:

Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Mars Attacks! (1996), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and the upcoming Dark Shadows (2011).

My personal favourites of his work are Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (with Johnny Depp).  We couldn’t take our cameras in so we just took shots outside of the exhibit afterwards.

A Cold Winter Night

I have many drafts of ramblings about my daily encounters. I have decided it is time to publish a few despite their ruggedness and babbling quality. If you are fond of lengthy and possibly aimless writing or if you are procrastinating on your work-at-hand I encourage you to read on! Please excuse my unorganized thoughts and some of the fickle opinions I have (as some change often or are influenced easily). Enjoy! :)

Animality 4: To Eat or Not to Eat, that is not the question

After much of what I’ve read and heard in relation to my Animality course, I was extremely skeptical, at first, about all the meat surrounding my family and I. According to Jonathan Safran Foer in Eating Animals, 99% of the meat we eat nowadays is sourced back to factory farms. This statistic proved powerful when mere numbers often do not. Seeing that my family (of eight) buys from a grocery chain (loblaws/costco) almost 100% of the time- with the exception of occasional chinatown purchases, I expect that all our meat is unfortunately from the confines of a factory farm some 1500 miles away. This distance is the average mileage our meat travels according to JFK, “like me driving from Brooklyn to the Texas Panhandle for lunch (104).”  When my mom made a meat-filled dinner one night I took a picture of the thawing used-to-be living beings and hoped for the best. What used to seem normal, now seems like a lot of meat to me.

Animality 3: Addicted to Meat?

What makes vegetarianism still such an extreme change or choice for us people with plenty of meat in our diets? Yes we humans are carnivores but at this point in time with so much variety we are definitely carnivores by choice. Why is it that when I ask my friends why the eat meat, they answer, “because it tastes sooo good! How can you not?” Does it not sound like they’re addicted, and they can’t help themselves? Similar to being on addictive drugs, it must be the feeling of self-gratification that provides the lure. However, often times these drugs are detrimental to the consumer.

Animality 2: Invited Guests

My most recent encounter with live animals happened to be with creatures cute enough to crunch, crush, or caress. Fortunately for them, the only action we took was the latter.

2Cockroaches

The first station for our 4-person group was that of the Madagascar hissing cockroaches. It was amusing that the first lab we were put through as first year biology students was with rather large and exotic insects, which are creatures that many people shy from the most. However, I found that the characteristics and adaptations of these fine specimens to be much more interesting and apparent that that of a worm or ant for example. Surprisingly, I am more willing to touch these cockroaches instead of other more familiar insects such as ants or spiders. We felt the texture of their backs and applied a little pressure, therefore causing these cockroaches to engage in what we hypothesized as their defense mechanism; aggressive hissing.  After an hour of mentally preparing myself, I thought I was ready for what came next.

Animality Journal 1: The Worm and the Ant

1Worm&Ant

I was on a stroll home with my overweighted, textbook-filled backpack, after the third day of school when I nearly squashed a peculiar pair frolicking on the side walk of my street. My first impression was that the worm was dead and the ant was the first of many to arrive at the feast. I was shocked when they impressively flipped around almost 90 degrees in my direction. The ant seemed to be clinging onto the worm and it did not fly off when the worm pulled this uncanny feat. One could interpret it as the ant’s stubbornness, the worm’s inability to escape, or maybe even a friendly fight, although I highly doubt the latter. Judging by the worm’s disgruntled-seeming movements and the fact that the ant was hanging on, it must have been very determined to hold on or biting the poor worm. It crawled along the worm’s body like scaling a rounded wall.

ET Canada Tour

The early bird gets the worm.

Meeting up 2.5 hrs early paid off as we arrived with 1.5 hrs to spare and decided to spend our time wisely- going to a Mongolian buffet.

P1030750

The special thing about this resturant was that you could construct your own noodle bowl. There are way too many ingredients for me to list, but most were basic like egg noodle, udon, onions, beef, chicken etc.  Then they would cook it right in front of you on a huge circular grill. Once you get your bowl back its contents are half the original size.

P1030753

I considered the chocolate fountain surrounded by pure fruits with the exception of marshmallows to be the highlight of the meal.

P1030755

Once we finally arrived at the Global Network building about 500m from the restaurant (according to Mr. Sim’s GPS) some guys announced that they had to relieve themselves. Of course, us girls go into the washroom and take pictures in the mirror.

gone for an enJOYing life RIDE

The ultimate joy ride starts with best pal and most eligible bachelor Sir Seanington, of course, driving stick or otherwise known as a manual car. The car has butterfly doors and is slick red, a luxurious four seater with leather seats, shaded windows and a convertible top. Due to confidentiality issues the make is not specified. This is a consequence attributed to the po po of ramed rowld, infamously named the rents. If your ride is looking too good, the rents will either come in and smash your ride or take it away. In ramed rowld, anything is possible and on this particular joy ride, it was an experience for the ages. Starting out in the deserted trashy and barren east, we (Sir Seanington, Zooey Deschanel, Knivez Chow and I) pass through stage 1 where Knivez Chow battles Emstro and Swiss until only one is left standing on the cobblestone ground. Amidst the action, the entourage is interrupted twice; first by dark mini me and future youtube star, and then by the boogie bumming crew who call me ‘Mami’ and the already terrified Zooey, ‘Mama’. After the battle winds down and Knivez emerges victorious, the four of us travel to level 2. On the way, we get lost and take the wrong door to a the cottage dimension. But once we realize we are traveling north and not west we turn back and drive awarer to Knivez home base. There we gain valuable items such as a tent and food. We also pass by a friendly dimension door with bright lights leading to Skins, a famous media con of a world, which distracts us from our own reality for a short while. It is then the four of us as a team face our first group test as a single +1 life is awarded for our progress. Instead of fighting for the added touch of immortality for ourselves, Sir Seanington suggests Zooey should get it because of her pale skin and little battle gear, rendering her cold and more vulnerable to coming events. Zooey nominates Seanington because he is the muscle that would have to fight the worst opponent if we were to be challenged. Knivez suggests me because I am the most threatened to be caught by the rents. I proclaim that Knivez should have it due to his chronic disease “China” that will eventually kill him. In the end, it is agreed -much to Knivez protest- that he should have the +1 life. We continue on to what we didn’t know was Stage 2 on an island beyond an island called Marina that was only connected to the mainland by a single-car-wide strip of raw land.

from Toronto to Miami

As I continue to experience the thrill of exiting high school and being caught in between being a teen and adult I try to take in every second of my summer vacation. This of course, is impossible, therefore I take an abnormal average number of pictures everyday to document this wonderful time of the year.
During this trip i spent more time than i ever have at looking at Florida vs. Toronto.

#1 Jealousy: Weather
Miami beach: average annual low of 22 C high of 32 C
Toronto: -30 C? one word… WINTER

#2: Tax
Miami: 7% Fort Lauderdale: 6%
Toronto: 13% (even on food!!!)
therefore shopping is great

#3: Beaches
Miami: the worldwide known South Beach
and more miles of warm sand all along the coast all the way down to the keys
Toronto: Ashbridges bay…BAY??! …wasaga beach (3 hrs away)

#4: Water activities
Florida: snorkeling, scubadiving, parasailing, swimming with dolphins, Everglades, Florida Keys
Toronto: toronto ferry to the island lets goooo haha

#5: Shopppinnggg. good deals, Cheap.
Came out of Wal-Mart with 9 bags of groceries not paying a cent for them…and guess what, I FELT GUILTY

Ok enough ripping on Toronto how about things I’m so NOT jealous of!

The Bata Shoe What?

After the Toronto Bata shoe museum’s rep amongst us teenagers has been so largely spoiled, getting in for the low cost of $5 seemed to be an optimistic start. Thank god for high school student cards and discounts.

The scary thing was that the clerk told us we could finish the whole museum in about 45 minutes. I knew it was small but not THAT small! 2 and 1/2 floors later I realized why… one can only read so much standing and half in the dark. Not only that but one can only read so much about the history of shoes…

My endurance could not even have been helped if I were a sneaker head or heels addict.

After reading a few descriptions in each exhibit section, I settled for taking somewhat like a picture book approach. Lending the job to my imagination, I found it much more entertaining and almost as accurate to create my own ideas of where the shoes originated and how the various outrageous designs were constructed. After all, how elevated can I assume my imagination or guessing skills are when they paste big letter/flag hints on these fabulous boots.

Elton John's Boots (for those of you who are having a brain fart)

Ginger Spice's boots (from the Spice Girls) spice up your life!

All in all, I find my mind taking the easy way out of this experience as the hard way would entail a lot of reading, explanation and tedious repetition. For a ‘middle of the summer’ expedition, I’d say it was a good learning experience in comparison to all my other experiences since most of those are the non-learning type. I recommend that if you plan to go, visit on Thursdays 5-8p (when its free). (Excuse my lazy on the fence writing)

Harbourfront Breaks and Culture BBoy event

Stage 1

Stage 1: The Redpath Stage

Sticks repping MEC whips out his bossmon headspins whenever he wants to steal the show. The first half of the round robin was on the Redpath Stage surrounded by many interesting vendors

Stage 2: Sirius Stage. This was one of those highlights associated with the saying 'cheer when you see something you can't do'. This is Stuntz and he can also often be found performing at Dundas Square downtown.
